OET (Occupational English Test)

OET (Occupational English Test) is designed to meet the specific English language needs of the healthcare sector. It assesses the language proficiency of healthcare professionals who wish to practise in an English-speaking environment. All four language skills are assessed, with Writing and Speaking tests available in 12 different areas of healthcare. All candidates sit the same Reading and Listening tests.

OET is accepted as proof of English proficiency in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Namibia and Singapore for registration in 12 healthcare professions.

There are 4 skills-based papers :-

The Listening and Reading papers are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand spoken and written English, based on health-related topics and tasks common to all professions. Texts range from short workplace notices and dialogues to longer articles and talks.

The Writing and Speaking papers are specific to the 12 individual healthcare professions. They are designed to reflect common tasks performed in the workplace. The writing asks candidates to write a referral letter, for example, while the Speaking asks candidates to role play a conversation in a clinical setting

OET Scores

Most healthcare regulators who recognise OET, require candidates to score C+ or B in the 4 papers to achieve the standard of English deemed sufficient to provide safe and effective care.

In the UK, for example, the General Medical Council (GMC) requires doctors to score B in all 4 papers in 1 sitting, whereas the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires nurses to score a B in Reading, Listening and Speaking and a C+ in Writing. The NMC also allows nurse to ‘club’ different tests taken over a 5-month period together to achieve the grades, as long as no paper was graded at under C+.

OET Recognition

The OET is recognised by regulatory healthcare bodies and councils, as well as university and Higher Education institutions, in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malta, the Maldives, Philippines, Qatar, UAE, Spain, Ukraine and Namibia

Computer Based Test of competence (CBT)

Preparing for CBT

All applicants who take the online eligibility assessment will then take the CBT test. The CBT test is taken to prove the theoretical and practice-based knowledge of the applicant. The tests can be registered and taken at the country of residence of that applicant. We at Uddish guide and assist the applicant through the entire process for the CBT test. You may contact us for more info

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

OSCE is an examination that acts out real scenarios which all nurses are likely to encounter when they assess, plan, carry out and evaluate care. Each separate clinical examination is known as a station and candidates will visit all the stations within a set time. The test of competence is based on current UK pre-registration standards where in applicant nurses are supposed to demonstrate safe and effective practice.

The OSCE is designed to assess your ability to competently apply your professional nursing or midwifery skills and knowledge in the UK. The OSCE test is easy to pass if you prepare ahead for the first test, the strict marking makes it tough to pass for many. There is no room for minor errors and as the applicant you are expected to be fluent and confident with all the procedures and skills.

When can you prepare for OSCE

You are eligible to begin the OSCE stage of the Overseas registration process once you have received a decision letter from the NMC and you have received a visa clearance to enter, work and stay in the UK.
